My Favorite Movies ✮

I'd say I'm a very active media consumer. Overly active some may say. There's so much media to enjoy in the world and I just want to see it all. Everything. I know it's not possible, but I can at least try to become as well-rounded in certain areas as possible. That being said, I wouldn't say my taste in things is very distinct or different from everyone else's. I like things that are popular, I also like things that may not be as known or well received. I don't like the idea of trying to like the most obscure thing possible just because it makes you feel different. The sooner you realize that it's okay to like things that are popular or what some consider "basic," the sooner you can realize that people's opinions on what enjoy shouldn't affect how much you enjoy them. Now! I will be talking about my favorite movies and why they resonate with me, these are off the top of my head and I'm sure there are things I either like more or equally. The movies I'll be covering are: Coraline, Back to the Future 2, Sinners, The Budapest Hotel, and Bullet Train. Again, there are a ton of other movies I love but these are the first that come to mind and that I want to talk about now. Let's get started!!

Coraline

I love this movie with all my heart; there is not another film that I love more. I went to see it rereleased in theatres last year in 3D and it was truly amazing. My favorite holiday season is Halloween, and it is obvious the spooky vibes that come from this film makes it the perfect one to put on during the season. I love stop motion as a medium, I think that you can feel the warmth that comes from the creation of pieces made using stop motion. Coraline isn't just a movie to me it gives me a feeling I can't describe. I love the mystery of the story, the number of theories that are surrounding the plot, most of which still remain unsolved. I love the music, the art style, the characters, the message. It is just amazing. I do find myself relating to Coraline. I can't really put my finger on why, but she does remind me of myself when I was younger. Another thing that makes me feel for this movie is the fact that the faces of the characters are asymmetrical. There was a point in my life, especially in high school, where I focused heavily on the asymmetry of my face. I became obsessed with it and felt I would never be beautiful because my face isn't symmetrical. Coraline's face is asymmetrical and growing up I always thought she was pretty, I felt that if she can do that then I can too, and it made me more comfortable with something that nobody truly cares about outside of their own face. I love this movie, and I always will.

Back to the Future 2

I love the entire trilogy of Back to the Future, but the second one will always be my favorite. I love sci-fi and I feel like the genre is a bit underappreciated. Of course we have superhero movies, but I love the other aspects of sci-fi that feel left behind in this age of media. I love movies made in the 80s and 90s because of the nostalgic feeling that comes with watching them. The production of the movies from this time truly makes you feel like you're traveling through time. I like the second movie the most because I love the idea of seeing the interpretation of the future from a previous time, it is so fascinating to me how they were able to make the world look. The things they came up with, the costume design, the tech, it's just so satisfying to see. It is a film I can rewatch a million times over. Seeing what people can do with a love for film is just fascinating to me, I can feel the passion and love for storytelling whenever I watch it.

Sinners

From the trailers alone I knew I wanted to see Sinners. I always say I want to see movies in theatres but procrastinate and end up missing the dates they come out. I saw the hype surrounding it and figured it was a good movie but didn't go and see it myself until the last couple weeks it was in theatres. It is nothing short of amazing. It is film. It is an art form brought to us so graciously and unapologetically. Being black and seeing this movie is just, it's lifechanging. It makes me proud; it makes me think more and more about the uncomfortable points of our history that people try to pave over. It makes me think more about the community I live in and the communities that lived on before me. It makes me think of my culture. They try to say that black people don't have a culture. That we are simply people away from our home who have been fed what it is the people who brought us here have given to us. We have proved that wrong, and this movie has put that fact on display. I love everything there is to love about this film. Nothing in it was missing, nothing in it was unnecessary. Every piece is so meticulously placed. To see a movie telling our story break records and make history even to this day, it feels like a win in a time where the world has been taking a lot of loses. It feels good to have something making such major headway and display the history of our people to the world. The action, the horror aspects, the acting, the scenes, it's truly a 10/10.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

I'd heard of The Grand Budapest Hotel before but had not watched it until a couple months ago. The set design is something I truly have fallen in love with. I can't describe what it is, or if it has a category, but it is so satisfying. The dialogue and character interactions, the scenes and storytelling, it is a truly beautiful film and is one I deeply enjoyed. I love the Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I see a parallel between that show and Wes Anderson films. That could be a wrong comparison to make, but the things I love about the show are what I love about this film. The colors, the music, it's just all very satisfying to watch and I would take 30 more movies in the same style telling a different story. I think I'll dive more into Wes Anderson films tonight.

Bullet Train

Action is one of if not my favorite genre. Bullet Train is another movie I was late to the party for, but I'd give anything to watch it again for the first time. It has a star-studded cast, the scenes and set up of the movie are genius. The plot twists and story development are nothing short of intriguing and kept me constantly guessing in the way that I love. I wouldn't complain if this movie was 6 hours long, I just want more. The complicated scenes that were shot for this movie show a passion for media and film that I feel is sometimes missing in some movies today. I found it funny as well which is usually unlikely for me. I just love this movie, and I hope to see a sequel coming in the near future. Also, I <3 ATJ!!!
